Trip to Freiberg - August 5, 2010

Gestern entschieden wir uns ziemlich spontan, einen Tagesausflug nach Freiberg zu unternehmen. Da wir bislang noch nie dort gewesen sind und das Wetter recht gut war, packten wir rasch ein paar Sachen zusammen und fuhren los. Insbesondere interessierte mich der LDS Tempel, neben Frankfurt der einzige Tempel der Mormonen in Deutschland. Dann besuchten wir selbstverständlich auch die historische Innenstadt. In den Dom kamen wir leider nicht rein, da wegen einer Führung geschlossen war. Aber Oliver schoss ein Foto durch die Glastür. Nach einem ausführlichen Stadtrundgang konnten sich unsere lauffleißigen Jungs noch auf einem sehr schönen und großen Spielplatz austoben. Dann ging's auch schon wieder nach Hause.

Yesterday, on August 5th, we spontaneously decided to take a day trip to Freiberg. It's a beautiful city close to our home, just about 30 km (18.6 miles) away. The weather was fine and I really wanted to see the LDS Temple. The Temple in Freiberg is besides the Temple in Frankfurt the only one in Germany. In 1985 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built the scenic Freiberg Germany Temple here because of the large number of members in the region. The Freiberg Germany Temple serves Latter-day Saints from all over Eastern Germany, and majority of the East Europe today.

Then we headed to the historical downtown of Freiberg. Freiberg (i.e. free mountain) is a city in the Free State of Saxony, Germany, administrative center of the Mittelsachsen district. The city was founded in 1186, and has been a center of the mining industry in the Ore Mountains for centuries. A symbol of this history is the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (famously known as the Mining Academy), established in 1765 and the oldest university of mining and metallurgy in the world. Freiberg also has a notable cathedral containing two famous Gottfried Silbermann organs. Furthermore there are two other organs made by Gottfried Silbermann - one at the St. Peter's Church (Petrikirche) and the other one at the St. James' Church (Jacobikirche). Before we went back home the kids had some time for romping and we rested a bit and had a short picnic. What a great day we had!
